This is a modest and straightforward mod for Streets of Rage Remake. You know the game well — a wonderful fan-made project once inspired by the legacy of SoR and reimagined as a modern expression of its timeless originality. Today the project is in the hands of the fan community, where SoRR serves as an optimal engine for powering new mods.
And so, here we are with another mod for SoRR 5.1 — Paintown. Simple and classic as a beat ’em up, it doesn’t appear to offer anything that sets it apart from standard titles. But that impression lasts only at first glance. For true enthusiasts, it holds something quite intriguing.
This is the first game created by the developer known in the community as Ryu Hoshi. You may recognize him from his series of projects such as SOR The Aftermath Ryu Edition or Final Fight Apocalypse. Along with dozens of other resources, he has established a significant presence within the scene.
And yet, this very game — this very mod — is his first contribution left to fans and players around the world. The mod had disappeared from its original download location, but we managed to restore it thanks to our friend Edgley from the YouTube channel of the same name. Now we bring it back to the stage so you can enjoy it once again.
Another distinctive feature that makes Paintown truly valuable is its connection to OpenBoR. The mod is a SoRR adaptation of the game by Juvinious and Kazzmir (Jon Rafkind) — a bold artistic provocation that places two competing engines in direct dialogue. This creative clash turns the project into a fascinating cultural artifact.
